2018 Trials

KJHC Team Selection Process

At KJHC we select teams in years 3/4 and 5/6 grade considering things like friendship requests, carpooling accommodations and coach availability.  Once players are in 5/6 premier or 7/8 divisions the club runs trials to determine our team selection decisions.  The aim of our policy and procedures is to ensure that selection decisions are made fairly and consistently, taking into account player development, team viability and available resources.  Every year the structure of the grades can change instigated by Wellington Hockey as the tournament director.

The most important thing we are trying to achieve is to ensure all kids are playing in the most appropriate grade for their current development stage.  Ideally we want kids to have a wee bit of stretch so they are challenged while still being able to apply skills with competence.

We now have a few years of trials data, and the longitudinal data is both very interesting and informative for our committee.  Year-to-year data shows evidence that kids will develop best when they are in a relatively comfy grade for them.   We seek to make the trials selection process as robust and transparent as possible.

As the club chooses to run trials for our older players, it is important to emphasise that players are scored on how they perform on the trial day.  Our own testing protocols show the data accuracy is very high but may well result in different selections if we were assessing players over an extended period of weeks

We understand from time-to-time children can be disappointed with their selection.  We are happy to provide their trials data if this might help them understand where they can improve.

Do we really need to Trial?

Not sure whether your child should attend trials? All children are welcome to trial in the designated school year group that applies to them. We encourage children to come along and give it a go, while at the same time noting it is not compulsory and children should also feel ok about opting out of the process if they wish.  For 5/6 grades we enter approximately eight teams each year with only 1-2 teams selected to participate in the premier grade.

Trials Dates

We realise trialing for winter codes in summer/autumn can be challenging.  We do our best to minimise disruption to summer sports by keeping the trial time late in the day and deliberating scheduling a Saturday and Sunday.  We also do our best to avoid our trials clashing with the  Weetbix Tryathlon which is on Sunday 18th March this year.  If however despite our efforts you are away or have an unavoidable clash, please contact us and we will do our best to organise an alternate date for your player to be assessed.  Contact convenor.kjhc@gmail.com

If your child is a year 7/8 or year 5/6 and intends to trial, please make sure you record the dates and times of trials below. Registration for trials will be covered by our main registration when that opens in late February.

We have a selection panel (3 selectors) that comprises independent selectors and coaches. The trial sessions for seniors are intentionally rotated between a Saturday and Sunday to minimise disruption to children who have other weekend sport commitments. All trials will be held at the National Hockey Stadium in Newtown.  It is really important that all children arrive early enough to be ready at the start time listed.

Please note the trial for juniors is compressed into one trial rather than two.  This is due to our assessment data clearly demonstrating over 95% accuracy in selecting children in this age by skills assessment only.  The intensity of exercise is very light in skills assessment, however it will be a long time on the turf for our juniors so sun protection and fluids will be important for the junior trial in particular.

Please bring to trials: drink bottle, snack, sunscreen, sunhat, shin pads, mouth guard and hockey stick.
