2017 Trials

We have been able to avoid a date clash with the Weetbix Tryathlon this year and have managed to secure turf times that usually work for the majority of our members.  Big thanks to WHA for supporting our beginning of season programme.

Do we really need to Trial?

Not sure whether your child should attend trials? All children are welcome to trial in the designated school year group that applies to them. We encourage children to come along and give it a go, while at the same time noting it is not compulsory and children should also feel ok about opting out of the process if they wish.  For 5/6 grades we enter a total of eight teams only two of these will be selected from trials.

Trials Dates

If your child is a year 7/8 or year 5/6 and intends to trial, please make sure you record the dates and times of trials below. Registration for trials will be covered by our main registration when that opens in late February.

We have a selection panel (3 selectors) that comprises independent selectors and coaches. The trial sessions for seniors are intentionally rotated between a Saturday and Sunday to minimise disruption to children who have other weekend sport commitments. All trials will be held at the National Hockey Stadium in Newtown.  It is really important that all children arrive early enough to be ready at the start time listed.

Please note the trial for juniors has been compressed into one trial rather than two.  This is due to our assessment data clearly demonstrating over 95% accuracy in selecting children in this age by skills assessment only.  Therefore trials for this group is now going to have a small game component at the end of the skills assessment and we are going to pack it into one event to save families the hassle of having two for this young age group.  The intensity of exercise is very light in skills assessment, however it will be a long time on the turf for our juniors so sun protection and fluids will be important for the junior trial in particular.

Please bring to trials: drink bottle, snack, sunscreen, sunhat, shin pads, mouth guard and hockey stick.

Juniors

Juniors – school year 5/6. Please note Junior trials have been compressed into one rather than two trials for 2017.  International hockey tournaments now scheduled for NHS have impacted the time and venue.  Please note the change to 2-5pm and shift to Fraser Park.

  • Saturday 18th March 2-5pm Fraser Park (1 trial only)

Seniors

Seniors – school year 7/8

  • Saturday 18th March 4-6pm Maidstone, Upper Hutt (Skills Assessment) Nb. Venue change has applied to this event due to international hockey tournament at NHS
  • Sunday 26th March 4:30-6pm NHS1 Girls/ NHS2 Boys (Game Assessment)

Can’t make the date?  Contact convenor.kjhc@gmail.com we can usually arrange an alternative time for your child to be assessed.
