This tournament is organised by the Karori Junior Hockey Club
Below is information on the intended format and rules, and registration requirements.

DRAW
The draw will be available on the “Tournify” app. Please download the app and search for the ‘Harbour & Fields Tournament”.
Due to the large number of games on the day, games will start promptly on time. Teams will be asked to ready to enter the field as soon as the prior game ends. If your team is not ready to start on the hooter, you will be at a disadvantage!
1) Grades
Year 5&6 Mixed – 6 aside (final format pending registrations)
- There will be 1 division split into 2 Groups. There will be two Development teams participating alongside competitive teams in Group A.
- To fairly adjust for the inclusion of development teams, only the top 3 teams in Group A will progress to the next round. The top 5 teams in Group B will progress to the next round.
- The Top 2 teams in Group A & B will progress to the Cup Round. The 3rd, 4th & 5th (plus 3rd from Group A) Teams from Group B will progress to the Shield Round.
- The Cup & Shield Rounds (Phase 2&3) consist of Semi Finals and Finals. There will be no 3rd & 4th.
Year 7&8 Mixed – 7 aside
- There will be one division split into 2 group of 6 teams.
- At the end of the Round robin games, the top 2 teams from each Group will progress to Cup Semi Finals & Finals. There will be no 3rd & 4th game.
Year 7&8 Girls – 7 aside
2) Competition Format
- The format will be structured to aim to provide each team with 100-140 minutes of playing time.
- Game length 20 minute games (no halftime) with 4 minutes between next game.
- Target format (depending on the number of registered teams) will be to play round-robin format where each team plays each other, with a final for 1st an 2nd.
- Alternative options will be considered based on final registrations.
- Points – 3 points for win, 1 for a draw, 0 for loss.
- Tie-breakers – Goal differential will apply in the event of tie-breakers.
- Goal differential Please note: The winning team in all games will receive a maximum goal differential of 3. So if a team wins 8 – 0, it will be recorded as 3 – 0. If a team wins 8- 2 it will be recorded as 5 -2. Within the spirit of the tournament, please respect the thinking behind this rule and use the opportunity to give game time to all members of your squad.
3) Cancellations
In the event of bad weather, the Tournament may be cancelled for either day. Tournament Organisers will contact the manager of each team to communicate this.
4) Field sizes
- Yr 5&6 – 1/3 Field
- Yr 7&8 – ½ Field
Confirmation of divisions and format will be subject to sufficient registration of teams.
5) Rules
Welington Hockey Association rules apply for the respective Yr5&6 and Yr7&8 grades.
Players must play in the grade as per the school year they are in.
All coaching is to occur from the side line
There are no restrictions on squad sizes however it is encouraged that squads be kept at a reasonably size to provide children with good playing time.
Rolling subs are allowed throughout the game.

WHA Code of Conduct principles are the standard that is expected of players, coaches and supporters.
Kiwi Sticks (Years 5 & 6)
- Team Size: 6 players on the field.
- Field Size: Also played on a third of a standard turf.
- Scoring: Goals are scored from a designated 10-meter scoring zone.
- Goalkeepers: No goalkeepers.
- Duration: 20 minutes – No half time.
- Corners: No penalty corners. A free hit is awarded on the 10-meter scoring line for a ball going over the backline off a defender.
Kwik Sticks (Years 7 & 8)
This grade is an introduction to half-field hockey.
- Team Size: 7 players, including a fully kitted goalkeeper.
- Field Size: Games are played on a half-sized turf.
- Duration: 20 minutes – No half time.
- Rules: Generally follow the standard FIH (International Hockey Federation) rules with some exceptions, such as no drag flicking, no overheads, and no sticks above the shoulders.
6) Referees
- Each time must provide a referee.
- It is the responsibility of the referee to ensure that all players are wearing shin guards and no items that may be of danger to themselves or opponents.
7) Presentation
The team that finishes top of each pool will be awarded certificates at the end of the day. Pool positions will be decided by the highest points. In the event of teams having the same number of points, the position will be determined by goal difference, then the pool result between the teams and finally, the toss of a coin.
8) First Aid
First Aid Teams/clubs are responsible for basic First Aid. However, there is limited First Aid available at the tournament desk. First Aid protocol will be covered at the Managers meeting at the start of the day.
9) Food, drink and facilities
A range of hot food, as well as hot and cold drinks will be available on site in the cafeteria. NO portable BBQ’s are permitted on Kapiti Turf. There is plenty of room for teams to bring gazebos/shelters/tents.
10) Coaches briefing
A coaches briefing will take place at 8.30am in the clubrooms on tournament day. Any last minute changes to the draw will be announced at this briefing. The first round of games start at 9am.
11) Scoring
Each coach/manager will be required to submit the score at the end of each game to the Tournament Desk.

Registration fees Payment is required to secure your place in the tournament. All entry fees must be paid two weeks prior to the tournament date by the 4th September. Registration fees will not be refunded if a team cancels within two weeks of the tournament or if the postponement day is required and a team is no longer able to attend. If the tournament is cancelled for any reason, all registration fees will be refunded.
